Both devices are considered some of the best iPhones available, and while there's no arguing that the iPhone 15 Pro Max is "better" in a lot of ways, it costs a lot more than the iPhone 15 Pro that it did in previous years.
The iPhone 15 Pro Max is a powerful and feature packed smartphone with enhanced overall performance. But, it's an expensive phone to own and operate when you consider the cost of the phone itself, AppleCare+, cellular phone service and any accessories (such as a case, wireless charging pad and extra USB Type-C cables).
This issue has been popping up, mostly specific to owners of the most expensive iPhone 15 Pro Max model. The problem is OLED burn-in, which is not just an iPhone-specific problem since it can occur on any device with an OLED screen.
One of the main differentiators between the Pro and Pro Max is display size, quite obviously. The Pro Max's 6.7-inch panel gives it roughly 20% more screen estate than what the Pro's 6.1-inch unit does.
While there's a lot about the iPhone 15 that will feel new, such as the Dynamic Island, the 48-megapixel camera and USB-C connectivity, those changes likely don't justify a $799 upgrade if you're currently happy with your device.
Apple addressed the issue back in September last year, stating a possible cause was due to third-party apps, and a supposed fix was released in iOS 17.1. However, despite several iOS updates with up-to-date phones running 17.3 and 17.4 on the way, some users are still reporting iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max heat issues.
According to AppleInsider's Andrew O'Hara, Apple is planning to scrap the iPhone 15 Pro Max branding and replace it with 'iPhone 15 Ultra': “Multiple sources have told me Apple will indeed use the “iPhone 15 Ultra” monicker for the plus-sized pro phone,” he posted.
iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are splash, water and dust resistant, and were tested under controlled laboratory conditions with a rating of IP68 under IEC standard 60529 (maximum depth of 6 metres up to 30 minutes). Splash, water and dust resistance are not permanent conditions.
The iOS 17.0. 3 update aims to tackle overheating issues that have plagued iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models. It fixes a bug within the operating system that was causing thermal problems, particularly with the new A17 Pro chip.
Pre-orders began on September 15, 2023, and the devices were made available to the general public on September 22, 2023. Like the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus, the 15 Pro and Pro Max replace the proprietary Lightning connector with USB-C to comply with European Union mandates.
Most years, the only reason to opt for an iPhone Pro Max is to get a larger screen and more battery life. However, this time around, the iPhone 15 Pro Max pulls out farther ahead of its little sibling thanks to an improved 5x optical zoom on its telephoto lens that has no downside.
The iPhone 15 Pro has a 3x 12MP telephoto camera, which you'll recognize from previous Pro iPhones. The iPhone 15 Pro Max however has gained a 5x zoom for closer portrait shots, something that rumors say won't come to the smaller Pro iPhone until the iPhone 16.
Plus, the iPhone 15 Pro has a better camera system. If taking better zoomed-in shots are important to you, it'd be worth it to shell out an extra $200. If you enjoy mobile gaming, with the iPhone 15 Pro getting a GPU boost from its A17 Pro chipset, the upper-tier model is a better choice for you.
The big difference is that the 15 is stuck on a fixed 60Hz refresh rate while the 15 Pro has a variable 120Hz plus an always-on display. It's not the end of the world and you may turn off these battery-hungry features, but it does mean scrolling is a lot smoother on the Pro.
The iPhone 15 Pro costs more than the 15 Plus, but has better cameras, more power, a 120Hz refresh rate, and an Action button. Albeit worse battery life.
So if you want to upgrade to a pro version of the iPhone for the camera improvements, the premium materials, and the latest smartphone features that Apple has to offer -- to future-proof your iPhone for another several years -- then I can highly recommend the iPhone 15 Pro and especially this year's iPhone 15 Pro Max.
